The sixth and final stop on the MWS tour took us to the host track of the Byron's Challenge in Joliet, IL. The track has been changed since my last visit now featuring really nice permanent curbs.

With most of the MWS Series winners already decided, the only class really up for grabs was the 1/8 Open class as I had only competed in three events and this would have to count for my fourth point total. Coming into the race, I needed only a TQ and 7th to win the title from my 3 previous TQ and wins. Also, this race would double as the season end to the MWS but also the ROAR Region 5 Champs.
In the Masters class, Eli Ezrow had already locked up the season points but he continued his strong season with another TQ.
In 1/8 Open, I was able to TQ and put down a very solid run and fast lap time that was actually faster than the drivers ran at the Byron's Challenge. Some said that the track conditions were actually not as good as the Byron's so for me it was nice to hear that the performance was so good.
With 1/8 Open and Masters racing together we had a great qualifying effort as Shepherd V8's held 5 out of the top 6 spots in qualifying. Unfortunetly, the finals weren't so kind to us.
In the final, Eli Ezrow had trouble early in the race and was out. Dan Lewis was also having trouble (I think engine) and John Peck also had something go wrong. That left us down to two with myself in the lead and Mark Sweeney in 2nd battling with Ted Hammer. Mark had a mistake that chunked a tire making his car really hard to hang onto giving 2nd place to Ted Hammer. I had stretched out a comfortable 4 lap lead when I was too greedy and crashed coming onto the back straight really damaging the car badly. I was out for a while and eventually returned just to turn some laps in case I needed them for points. Mark Sweeney held onto his car for the remainder of the race and finished up in 2nd while I ended up in 6th which was enough for me to win the MWS 1/8 Open title for 2009.
This was my first year back running the MWS Series and it was really a great time. I think that now they have a solid series director (good job Mr. Power!!) and good people backing him up (Mr. Cooper) that next years MWS should be even better. Hopefully, more racers will come out and enjoy the events at the different venues. I know depending on the schedule I will definatly try to be there again next year.
Congrats again to Mr. Ezrow for his 2009 MWS Masters title making it a clean Shepherd sweep of the MWS 1/8 classes with my Open title. Congrats to all the other class winners and racers for supporting the series!!
